Gresley A4 class pacific 4-6-2 locomotive No. 4468 Mallard is credited with 126 mph with a dynamometer car behind and associated travelling journalists. Steam locomotive speeds have sparked endless debates as to whether the number was genuine or a US locomotive has gone faster but not officially recorded. It is generally accepted that Mallard is the fastest steam locomotive, probably for ever.

But as to whether city of Truro was first to 100 is a different matter and it is generally accepted that the crown for the first authenticated ton belongs to 4472 Flying Scotsman 30 years later.
