Carousels before Christmas
Hyde Christmas Lights were due to be switched on later in the day. As a prelude several Christmas Fairs were going on around town and on the Civic Square there was a program of entertainment. For the children in addition to the traditional carousel that has been around for about a century there was also a mobile carousel in the form of "teacups" to ride in.
Cooke's Children's Carousel
The roundabout on Hyde Market was manufactured by Halsteads of Sowerby Bridge in 1897. It was established on Hyde Market in 1919 by John William (Jack) Greaves. In the 1920s he passed it to his daughter Lily and her husband Bill Cooke. It has now been in the Cooke family for three generations.
