Old pathway across mud out to line of stakes
Old pathway across mud out to line of stakes
A narrow path edged with stone, but apparently now lacking any surfacing, winds its way out to a line of stakes. More stakes closer in are just showing not very clearly on the left. The stakes may be the same as those apparently further to the right (nearer the Tudor fort remains) that recently appeared from the mud and were analysed to be aged between 1461 and 1636 AD, more or less contemporary with the fort. I can find no reference to this path.
The shingle beach here is eroding back towards the seawall, and its material apparently extending the length of Mersea Stone. It follows that the path was under the beach until the last few years. The mud is also eroding down, hence the emergence of the newly noticed stake systems. There has been mapped until recently a 'tidal pool' in this vicinity, which has now been cut away with no trace. Perhaps all to do with fish traps?
