NZ2115 : The George Hotel : Piercebridge We all think of 'The George' as synonymous with Piercebridge, but being south of the Tees it is in Cliffe. A friend of mine, born in Piercebridge but who played his cricket for Cliffe , used to emphasise the difference in a tale he told. To play for Yorkshire (in the days when Yorkshire CC commanded respect) you had to be born in Yorkshire. As a consequence expectant fathers could be seen wheeling their wives across the bridge from Piercebridge (Co.Durham) to Cliffe (NRY) when labour set in. This of course was in the days when brass bedsteads had castors, presumably for just such emergencies.
