For the 2017 Lightwaves festival, Quays Culture once again showcased a curated collection of tableaux from the Blackpool Illuminations as they had done in 2016. This year’s tableaux included Star Trek and children’s TV favourites Sooty Sweep and Soo, located next to the tram stop and a fantastical pirate scene located at the Dock 9 waterfront.
Each of the works reflect different themes of the MediaCityUK landscape. The Pirate Scene reflects (loosely) the nautical connections of this location which was once Manchester Docks.

Quays Culture - Lightwaves
Lightwaves claims to be the UK’s largest free outdoor digital art light show. The annual festival, hosted by Quays Culture, showcases an eclectic programme of digital light art, taking over public spaces in Salford Quays and MediaCityUK each December. Each year, Lightwaves features new and exclusively commissioned digital art displays alongside tableaux borrowed from the Blackpool Illuminations.
