Wentworth Woodhouse, the largest privte home in the UK. Seat of the Earls Fitzwilliam. Billy, Earl Fitzwilliam taught his pit boys how to play polo on their pit ponies on the front lawn at Wentworth during the miners' strike of 1926. Nationalisation of the mines 1946 led to the decline of the benevolent feudal employment of local miners. Today, coal can still be found on the surface of the Barnsley seam, when walking over the ploughed fields at Wentworth. Coal, or "Black Diamonds" from Wentworth and other coal mines made England the richest country in the world in 1860.
