The Smugglers Inn, Osmington Mills
The Smugglers Inn is a popular pub among holidaymakers visiting the Dorset coast, as it was when this photograph was taken in 1981. Nevertheless, it has a notorious history. Parts are said to date from the 13th century but it was in the late 18th century when the landlord, Emmanuel Charles, was heavily involved with smuggling. It later passed to the Champ family who also carried on the illegal business. In those days it was known as the Crown but later became the Picnic Inn before adopting the present name. The sign above the door in the picture shows it to be a free house, but it is now part of the Hall and Woodhouse estate.
