NS4379 : An old ford

taken 1 year ago, 3 km from Blairquhomrie, West Dunbartonshire, Great Britain

An old ford
An old ford
The hollow way entering from the lower-right corner is not the course of a burn, but the remnant of NS4379 : Ancient trackway. Here, near the sources of the Spouts Burn, the old track crosses the burn. The area still has the appearance of a ford.

I believe that it was once called Hairshaw Ford, and that a lime-kiln called the Belting Kiln was nearby; of the kiln, only a hollow, if anything, would now remain.

These names pre-date the earliest OS maps of the area, and they do not appear on any of those maps. See the relevant section LinkExternal link of the article linked from the end-note for further discussion.

For a view in the opposite direction from about the same place, see NS4379 : An old track.
Network of old limestone industry tracks
A very extensive network of ancient tracks on the moors in West Dunbartonshire links old quarries, ruined lime-kilns, and other sites connected with the local limestone-burning industry, which flourished in the 18th century. See LinkExternal link for a Geograph article about the network, and LinkExternal link for an annotated satellite view of it.
