Brickwork Protection on a Canal Bridge
Brickwork Protection on a Canal Bridge
This shows the cast iron protection piece fitted to the corner of the brickwork of bridge number 77 on the Shropshire Union Canal. The purpose of these pieces was to prevent the towing ropes of the canal barges and narrowboats from cutting into the brickwork. The grooves caused by these ropes can be clearly seen.
