Railway Fencing on Bridport Branch Line (5)
This fencing is alongside the old track bed of the Maiden Newton to Bridport Branch line at Wytherston Wood. This is a detail of the top of one of the gate posts in the fencing for a pedestrian gateway. The gate post consists of a substantial cast post surmounted by a cast finial. Each fence wire ran round a spool located within the post and each wire was kept under tension by a ratchet and pawl which can be seen on the right hand side of the post. A metal bracing arm going into the ground at 45 degrees (behind post) was used to increase stability. This post still has the finial. One segment of the gate post has a flat metal plate with a slot carrying the words BOLT PLATE.
