Footbridge over the River Derwent near Church Wilne
Footbridge over the River Derwent near Church Wilne
On the Midshires Way long distance path. The bridge appears to have been built as a replacement for the bridge adjacent to Wilne Mill, a short way upstream, when this developed into a major pyrotechnics manufacturing site, now Chemring.
River Derwent (Derbyshire)
The Derwent is in Derbyshire. It is 66 miles long and is a tributary of the River Trent which it joins south of Derby. For half its course, the river flows through the Peak District.
Much of the river's route, with the exception of Derby, is rural. However the river has also seen many human uses, and between Matlock and Derby was one of the cradles of the Industrial Revolution, providing power to the first industrial scale cotton mills. Today it provides a water supply to several surrounding cities, and its steeply sided valley is an important communications corridor through the uplands of the Peak District.
The Midshires Way
Not as well known as the coastal, Transpennine or Coast-to-Coast paths, this is nevertheless one of the longest of the long distance paths, stretching for 225 miles/362 km between Bledlow in Buckinghamshire and Comstall, Stockport. It passes through Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Greater Manchester.
As a multi-user route, it largely follows bridleways and quiet lanes, but in many places has alternative sections using footpaths away from road traffic.
