Memorial Stone
This is one of a series of stones along the Pencaitland Walk, which are like gravestones in memory of the coal pits that once dotted the countryside here. It's easily legible except that the apparently missing 'D' in 'Howden', on close inspection, looks like a 'G' that has been filled in; 'Tranent' is misspelled; and 'OR' is missing from 'important'. For an explanation of the coal seams referred to see NT4069 : Coal Seams.
Pencaitland Railway Walk

The Pencaitland Railway Walk is a 12 km (7½ mile) path using the trackbed of the Gifford and Garvald Light Railway. It is well supplied with interpretation boards, and the surface is excellent even in dead of winter. North of Ormiston it joins the older Monktonhall, Macmerry and Ormiston Branch of the North British Railway, and is joined by Bogside Siding and other lines, now no more than undulations in the landscape.
