View towards Beachy Head Lighthouse
View towards Beachy Head Lighthouse
This photo shows the cliff face looking West towards the red and white Beachy Head lighthouse just out to sea. It is 141 feet (43 metres) in height and first became operational in October 1902. Incidentally, Beachy Head first appeared as "Beauchef" in 1274 and was "Beaucheif" in 1317, then becoming Beachy Head by 1724. It has nothing to do with beach, but is a corruption of the original French words meaning "beautiful headland".
