taken 6 years ago, near to Cummersdale, Cumbria, England

A male goosander
A male goosander
One of about a dozen or more goosanders which have made themselves at home on a park lake - for location see NY4053 : Black swan and ducks at Hammond's Pond .
The goosander (Mergus merganser) is a diving duck belonging to the sawbill family (RSPB notes LinkExternal link ). The bill is long and serrated with a hook at the tip. Ideal for catching fish, although the individuals at this park are very partial to chunks of bread.
