The Three Sisters are three stone pillars which were erected on Green Hill at what is now Waterside Street by Sir Thomas Makdougall Brisbane Link in 1808.

The pillars were built as meridian sighting posts, an aid to establishing due north even if the north star was not visible, from the observatory at his home in Brisbane Glen on the north side of the town.

A small pillar in a field NS2061 : Meridian Pillar - Brisbane Glen, Largs near to his observatory in the glen was originally a device through which the 3 Sisters could be sighted, and thereby due north established.
