SS Cliff Quay was one of the last steam colliers to operate and was built in 1950 by W Pickersgill & Sons Ltd in Sunderland. She was of 3357 GRT, 338' 11" long and 46' 3" extreme breadth. Propulsion was by this inverted vertical triple expansion engine built by the North Eastern Marine Engineering Company (1938) Ltd. The cylinders were 19", 31" & 54" x 39" stroke. Superheated steam was supplied at 220 psi from two Scotch boilers. It was a reheater engine with poppet valves on the HP and IP and a slide valve on the LP.

This view is the lower engine room on the starboard side looking aft. The counterbalanced intermediate pressure crank is seen with a set of eccentrics forward of it. The small steam turning engine is also clearly seen. I suspect a lot of the white debris is asbestos as the ship was in the process of being scrapped.
