The lane made an S-bend to cross the railway, which was the former North Staffordshire Railway line between Macclesfield and Leek.

The comparison with this 2013 view LinkExternal link from the same viewpoint is sobering. The buildings visible in that view were completely destroyed in a massive explosion in 2015 in which 4 lives were lost. The large sandstone slab on the roadside in the centre of the view is a memorial to the victims.
