Beamish - colliery winding engine
Beamish - colliery winding engine
Beamish is home to a spectacular open air museum that includes a Victorian colliery. The winding engine was relocated from the original pit nearby and is now demonstrated in steam. The winding engine is one of the eponymous Durham winders - a vertical single cylinder engine with Z-link parallel motion that is credited to Phineas Crowther. It was built in 1855 by J & G Joicey. The cylinder is 24" x 60" and fitted with Cornish valves operated by plug-rod gear. This view is no longer possible without permission from the museum as there is no longer public access to the upper levels.
