Lancashire Fusiliers Boer War Memorial, Salford

This War Memorial for soldiers of the Boer War stands at the corner of Chapel St and Oldfield Rd in Salford. It was the work of sculptor George Frampton RA and is a replica of the memorial at SD8010 : Lancashire Fusiliers War Memorial, Whitehead Gardens in Bury. Known as the "Cheering Fusilier", it was originally unveiled on July 13, 1905 by Edward VII, accompanied by Queen Alexandra, before a crowd of thousands, as part of a Royal visit to Manchester and Salford.

The memorial has recently been restored to its former glory as part of the urban regeneration plan being carried out in the Chapel Street area. It was re-dedicated 24th June 2012 (Salford Council press release).

The memorial is a Grade II listed structure (List entry Number: 1386163 LinkExternal link Historic England).

The Former Salford Royal Hospital Building

The former Salford Royal Hospital building occupies the corner of Chapel Street and Adelphi Street, opposite the junction with Oldfield Road. Once the city’s biggest hospital, it closed as a hospital in 1993 when Hope Hospital was enlarged and rebranded as the Salford Royal Hospital Trust. The building has since been converted into luxury apartments, although the exterior of the building has remained largely unchanged.
