For context, see NS3779 : The summit of Carman Hill.

The cairn had recently been enlarged, as comparison with an earlier picture demonstrates: NS3779 : Marker cairn on Carman Hill. It was probably on its way to changing its function from marker cairn to memorial cairn when a story appeared about it in a local newspaper; see the end of NS3779 : The summit of Carman Hill). I thought it would be as well to show the cairn in this form, in case it subsequently disappears.

However, this is only a matter of recording what is there. It does not mean that I approve of the changes made here; far from it. The site is given statutory protection under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979, and is not there to serve as a private memorial garden for anyone who feels like appropriating it in that way.

On a similar point, some memorial plaques had already appeared nearby, attached to the large boulders that are one of the most prominent bounds of this historic site. Wherever a few such plaques appear, others tend to follow; I would not wish to see these proliferate here either.

The cairn, before enlargement, was recent, no more than a decade old. The stones used to enlarge it are, at least, not taken from the fort itself(*); it should therefore be easy to undo these recent changes. White van man has employed a small wheelbarrow to bring the stones up to build his cairn.

(*) The stones of which the fort is built are grey; the stones used to enlarge the cairn are reddish, similar to those found in the disused quarry at the foot of the hill, though not necessarily from there: NS3678 : Carman Quarry.
Carman Hill-fort

This large hill-fort see LinkExternal link (at Canmore) was identified in 1954 from aerial photographs, and is thought to date from the Early Historic period (Dark Ages). See Link for a Geograph article on the fort. See LinkExternal link for an annotated satellite view, and Link for other antiquities nearby.
