New Tunnels in Newcastle
When the Tyne and Wear Metro was constructed, it crossed the Tyne by its own new bridge, later to be christened the Queen Elizabeth bridge. At the north end of the bridge, the underground section to Central and Haymarket commenced at the tunnel portals shown here, photographed several months before Metro services began and before the overhead wires had been put in place.
