Dry-stone wall with throughs
As the name suggests, throughs or throughstones run through the width of the wall. In this section of the wall, the throughs project on both sides. In the picture, one is prominent in the foreground, but others are visible at regular intervals behind it. For context, see NS3778 : Dry-stone wall, a view in the opposite direction from the same place.
The throughs are not present by way of making an overgenerous provision of stiles, but are there to increase the strength and stability of the wall; see the comments at SD9491 : A Wensleydale wall and SE0287 : A Wensleydale wall.
