The Flowers of Manchester
The Flowers of Manchester
On 6 February 1958 BEA flight 609, carrying the Manchester United squad returning from their successful European Cup quarter final tie with Red Star Belgrade, crashed on take-off at Munich-Riem Airport where it had stopped to refuel; there were 23 fatalities with 21 survivors. Those killed included 2 crew members, 8 members of the famous “Busby Babes” team who had been league champions in both of the two previous seasons, 3 club officials, 8 journalists and 2 other passengers.

To mark the 60th anniversary of this tragedy, the club displayed this clock face with the hands showing 3.04pm, the time of the crash, on the side of Old Trafford's East Stand, above the club's megastore SJ8096 : A Chilling Time. Two huge banners were draped either side of the clock carrying the names of the eleven club employees who died and the hashtag #FLOWERS OF MANCHESTER which was a poem sent to a folk magazine ‘SING’, anonymously, in October 1958. This was later set to music and is sung every year on the anniversary of the crash

There are seven verses to the Flowers of Manchester. The first is:
“One cold and bitter Thursday in Munich, Germany,
Eight great football stalwarts conceded victory,
Eight men will never play again who met destruction there,
The flowers of English football, the flowers of Manchester”
