An attractive church which has retained much of its historic fabric, even through 19th century restorations.

It comprises nave with north and south aisles, chancel with north aisle, north and south porches and west tower.

Some remaining stonework shows that there was a Saxon church on the site of the nave (and possibly the chancel), to which a tower was added in the 12th century, and the chancel (if not already existing). (Saxon long and short work at the west end of the nave includes part of an earlier Celtic preaching cross.)

Aisles were added in the 14th century, that to the south in the early part, in Decorated style with windows with reticulated tracery, and the north aisle in the later part in Perpendicular style.

The chancel was rebuilt in the 15th century and the clerestory and upper stages of the tower added at around the same time.

The roofs were all reconstructed during the 19th century restorations.

Inside the church, the font is early 13th century Transitional. Many of the pews in the nave date back to the 16th century, the remainder being 19th century to the same design. The communion table dates from 1630. Other furnishings are 19th or 20th century.

There are a number of memorials inside the church, the most prominent of which is the mid-15th century alabaster chest tomb of Thomas Tickhill.

The church is Listed Grade I.

The churchyard contains two Grade II Listed chest tombs of the early/mid 18th century. The churchyard wall (C19) and lychgate (c.1916) are also Listed Grade II. The earlier of the chest tombs and the lychgate both commemorate rectors of the parish who were also members of the Holden family who owned Aston Hall!
