Impington windmill - fan tail
Impington windmill - fan tail
This automatically keeps the sails into the wind and is very important even in a mill that is not in use. If the mill gets 'tail-winded' a strong gust can lift the sails and the windshaft off their seatings and effectively wreck the mill. One of the patent sails is also seen and the ball and finial on the ogee cap. As can be seen, the top part of the mill is a smock mill with weatherboarding.
