Northfield Windmill, Soham
Northfield Windmill, Soham
This is the floor between the stone floor and the cap. The wooden mainshaft dominates the view. The sack hoist chain is on the right and passes through trapdoors on a raised trunking alongside the access staircase. The wooden framing and bracing of the smock mill is clearly visible. The mechanism top right is, I think, the sack hoist.
Northfield or Shade Windmill
Formerly an eighteenth century drainage smock mill it was moved to the current site around 1834, elevated on a hexagonal brick base and converted to grind corn.
