Wicken Windmill - external power supply
Wicken Windmill - external power supply
This shows where an external power supply (from a portable steam engine for example) would be fed into the windmill. An external belt drive pulley turns the cast iron pinion on the left. When properly installed, this drives the larger bevel wheel with wooden teeth that is on the same shaft as the red spur gear that drives the great spur wheel and all the machinery in the mill. This drive arrangement is out of gear in this view. Beyond is one of the two stone nuts, also out of gear. The sack hoist chain is on the left.
Wicken Windmill
Wicken windmill is a preserved 12 sided smock mill in the Cambridgeshire village of Wicken. It is not to be confused with the nearby wind pump TL5670 : Wicken Fen windpump.
This example was built in 1813, grinding corn for bread and for animal feed. With the slow decay of small scale milling from 1914 Wicken because disused by 1930. After years of rot enthusiasts restored the building to its present working state. There are two pairs of working stones (once three) along with flour dresser and all the usual mill machinery.
