Landscape survey at Rattenraw
A volunteer from Tynedale Archaeology Group contemplates cord rig ploughing visible in low winter sunlight associated with a probable Iron Age field system and nearby settlements. Cord rig is characterised by narrow, 1-1.5m wide, linear cultivation ridges frequently associated with pre-Roman settlements of the 1st Millennium BC but possibly remaining in use much later. They are only visible on the ground, particularly in the Scottish Borders and Northumbrian uplands where subsequently undisturbed by later agriculture or, on excavation, when sealed below later ground surface. The name was originally coined from the corduroy appearancce of the land surface visible on aerial photographs. There is another photo here NY8495 : Prehistoric rig and furrow, Rattenraw
