Stevens' Mill, Burwell - why he did he take that?
Stevens' Mill, Burwell - why he did he take that?
This is a tower mill with four patent sails and fantail winding. The tower is tarred brick and clunch and the mill was built in 1820 and worked until c1955.

This particular shot is on the last floor below the cap - also known as the dust floor. The curb that the cap sits on is at the top and is secured by nuts and bolts with the nuts being in the square pockets in the wall. The chain rises diagonally from the sack hoist below and passes over the pulley to descend vertically through a series of trap doors. A trap door and its hinges is seen around the chain towards bottom left. The doors open to let a bag of grain up and then slam shut below it. The miller is on the ground floor operating the hoist and counts the slams until the grain is where he wants it and he disengages the hoist with the bag sitting on a trapdoor. The railings at bottom left are around the stairwell from the floor below. Bits of restoration paraphernalia litter the floor.

I hope that answers the question in the title.
