Stevens' Mill, Burwell - the cap
Stevens' Mill, Burwell - the cap
This is a tower mill with four patent sails and fantail winding. The tower is tarred brick and clunch and the mill was built in 1820 and worked until c1955.

This view shows the boarded cap with a ball and finial on top. There are four patent sails and this shows the shutters operated by linkages from the central spider. The angle of attack of the sails can also be appreciated. At the rear of the cap is the fantail that turns the mill into the wind automatically. Hanging vertically below the fantail staging are the ropes/chains that operate the brake and striking gear.
