TQ0003 : River Arun at Ford

taken 9 years ago, near to Ford, West Sussex, Great Britain

River Arun at Ford
River Arun at Ford
Looking upstream, with the small marina here prominent. The viewpoint is about where the long derelict Portsmouth and Arundel Canal left the Arun. There was once a typical brick canal bridge here taking the river towpath over the canal, which immediately entered a lock with a rise to 5 ft above mean high water spring tides in the river. The near tidal inlet on the left was nothing to do with the canal, and was once also bridged, less substantially, across its mouth. It was, and is, the discharge from the Binsted Brook sluice, although these days saltings have been dug out to form a small dock for houseboats. The far inlet is more recent, for the marina slipway.
