Cowen Monument and Cross House, Westgate Road
In the foreground is the statue of Liberal MP for Newcastle Joseph Cowen Jr (1829-1900) who held the seat between 1874-86. Cowen ran the Blaydon Brick Co (with his father, Joseph Cowen Sr, who preceded him as MP) and the Newcastle Daily Chronicle. The monument, which was erected in 1906 and paid for by public subscription is listed, Grade II.
Cross House was built in 1912 and on 23 December 1919 was the scene of a major fire in which twelve people were killed.
