Detail at one of the supports.
Railway viaduct over the River Trent near Melbourne
Built in 1867 by the Midland Railway as part of its Derby to Ashbourne branch.

It consists of 5 equal spans of wrought iron girders supported on circular cast iron piers in sets of 5. The main girders are of plate form, with stiffening ribs, the outer girders being latticed, partly for decorative reasons. The outer piers are topped with brackets with decorative spandrels. There are decorative cast iron balustrades running the full length of the viaduct.

The railway finally closed in 1980, the track being lifted in 1988 after which the viaduct was restored to become part of National Cycle Route 6.

The viaduct is Listed Grade II.
