Information board, St Michael's chapel
Information board, St Michael's chapel
This recent installation, mentioned under SX9065 : Observatory beside St Michael's chapel, provides interesting reading. "The only real parallel in England" to the neighbouring chapel "is the round-vaulted St Michael's at Rame Head", and "there are similarities with some Jersey churches", But the main difference is that this chapel never had a liturgical function; the panel goes on to suggest that the building may have been built "to commemorate a vision, or revelation; later use as a beacon or lighthouse is contingent and speculative".

The platform on which the board stands was the "prime observation spot" for "cheering spectators" on the 18th December 1848, on the occasion of the arrival of the first passenger train from Newton Abbot; the station is not now visible from here because of trees. The limestone wall protects visitors from a sheer drop into a former quarry; see SX9065 : St Michael's Chapel scaffolded.

The trees emerging through the autumn mist also appear in SX9065 : Trees in the mist, Shiphay.
