48-80 Charing Cross Road
A lengthy run of forbidding flats built for those displaced by the clearances brought about by the creation of Charing Cross Road and neighbouring streets. Erected in 1883-84 by George Borer for the Improved Industrial Dwellings Co., which usually did better than this.
The ground floor shops have been the heart of the street's famous second-hand book trade for years. Their ranks have been depleted but some survive.
