Tuckers Maltings
A malt house or maltings was a building used for the malting of barley for the brewing of beer.

Tuckers Maltings LinkExternal link is a floor maltings. It is open to the public, and the tour shows the machinery and buildings still in use for producing malt from barley for a number of breweries. Photos taken during a tour show stages of production.
The object of the process is to change starch to maltose sugar by germination, which is stopped by heat.
Immediately after delivery barley is dried, so it can be stored without germination. The grains are screened. When required it is steeped in water, and spread out on a floor to germinate. It is moved to the kiln, spread out on another floor where hot air is blown through it. Rootlets on the grain are removed by a deculmer. The malt can be stored, and in due course is bagged for delivery to breweries.
