SE2932 : Sewer syphon?

Sewer syphon?
Sewer syphon?
There is one of these features each side of the M621 at this point. The large concrete manhole slab suggests some kind of large chamber beneath the surface box. One possibility is that they are interceptors for motorway drainage to prevent oil getting into the sewerage system. Alternatively they may represent the ends of an inverted syphon where construction of the motorway embankment interfered with an existing trunk sewer.
