Westminster Abbey
Westminster Abbey
The present Westminster Abbey was built between 1245 and 1517. As the name suggests, it was a monastery before the Reformation. After dissolution, it briefly became the cathedral church of the newly created Anglican Diocese of Westminster in 1540, which was split off the Diocese of London by decree of Henry VIII. This was short-lived, though, and in 1550 the two dioceses were re-united, Westminster Abbey becoming the secondary cathedral of the joint bishopric, whose main seat was the (old) St Paul's Cathedral. In 1556, Westminster Abbey was restored as a Benedictine monastery under Mary I only to be dissolved again by Elizabeth I in 1559. Following that, the church was made a Royal Peculiar, i.e. a church set outside the jurisdiction of the local bishop and answerable directly to the monarch as head of the Church of England, a situation which has lasted until today.

I can't believe I managed to find a gap in the traffic on Broad Sanctuary LinkExternal link , the road in the foreground, to get a clear view of the frontage of the church.
