A poem by W. Kersley Holmes about a mountaineers wife tidying up.

No Ordinary Boots

As you say these boots are useless, worn
and warped and past repair
Patched, re-patched, disintegrating wrecks
a tramp would scorn to wear.
As you also say, impatient, they with
their excessive size,
Occupy a cupboard-corner other things
could utilise.

Yet restrain your tidying impulse, your
irreverent instinct stay;
Part of me would pine and perish if you
threw those boots away.
They are far from common footgear, note
the serried nails which grin,
Ground to stumps by strenuous usage,
round the wide welt worn so thin.

Not for scurrying round cities, not for dog-
obliging strolls,
Were arrayed those metal molars, cut and
stitched those sturdy soles.
If you still regard them lightly, if still
junk they seem to be,
Hold them in the sun a moment and be
awed by what you see:

Tiny flashes from their wrinkles, myriad
jewels in the light !
Do you understand their meaning as you
marvel at the sight ?
Precious particles whose presence my old
heart with memory thrills
Gemming still that oft soaked leather
specks of schist from Highland hills !
