Jurassic sandstone overlain by Tertiary lava flows, Carsaig Bay
The cliffs in the foreground are composed of Jurassic strata - a sandstone containing concretions knowns as "doggers", particularly noticeable in the patch of rock on the left of the photograph. Higher up (on the right of the photograph) you can see columnar formations of a basalt lava flow which overlies the sandstones and is much more recent - formed during the Tertiary volcanic period when so much of the rock in Mull, Ardnamurchan and Skye was formed as Europe and North America began to split apart. Higher again are a succession of lava flows, most not showing such well developed columns (which are caused by tension within the rock as it cools). The foreground beach is mainly composed of basalt boulders and cobbles, but there is a smattering of the Jurassic rocks, and a few fossils can be found, once you've got your eye in.
