The Carstairs Meanders :: NS9643
One of the best locations in the UK to see active meanders and the development of an alluvial floodplain is on the River Clyde, south of Carstairs. The Clyde is joined by Medwin Water at this point, an area which is known as 'The Meetings'.

Unlike the lower reaches of the Clyde, the area around Carstairs has not been subjected to a great deal of river Engineering, which makes this set of meanders comparatively rare in the UK.

Several meanders and oxbow lakes can be seen here, as can some dry river channels on both rivers. Best appreciated from the air.

Compare the meanders in the photos with the OS map surveyed in 1858 LinkExternal link to see the considerable changes in course which have taken place since then.
