Church of St John the Baptist, South Croxton
This is a relatively plain and simple church, but with the advantage of not having been disturbed by Victorian rebuilding.

The church consists of nave, chancel and south aisle with west tower with spire and south porch. Much of this is 14th century, late Decorated, although the chancel may be earlier. The round-headed priests door could be Norman, and the Y-tracery in the windows Early English, possibly 13th century.

The tower has tall double-tier openings to the bell chamber clearly pointing towards the Perpendicular style.

The likelihood of an earlier church is determined by the presence of a Norman font with an unusual combination of arcaded patterns.

Latter work includes the nave roof, probably 15th century, with good carved bosses. The angels of the wall posts are 19th century.

The communion rails are plain, but of 17th century origin. Also plain is the oak pulpit from the following century.

Other items to note are the Decorated piscina with flame crocketing in the south aisle, the 16th century memorial tablet with brass inlay to Mary Barnes, also in the south aisle, and a late 19th stained glass window portraying John the Baptist by Kempe.

Externally, an obelisk with a lamp, outside the south porch, commemorates the rebuilding of the church in 1936-8 following the fall of the spire due to a lightning strike.

The church is Listed Grade II*.
