Latimer House
Latimer House
The present red brick Tudor-style mansion was designed by Edward Blore, and completed in 1838. It replaced an Elizabethan house, which was gutted by fire.

The original house, where Charles I was imprisoned in 1647 and Charles II took refuge before fleeing abroad, was home to the Cavendish family, who became the barons of Chesham.

During World War II, Latimer House was one of three stately homes where captured German U-boat submarine crews and Luftwaffe pilots were initially held before being transferred to prisoner of war camps. After the war, it was the home of the National Defence College.

It is now a De Vere hotel, used for weddings and conferences, with extra annexe accommodation in the grounds.
