One of two stations in the town centre, this one was originally operated by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway and is where lines from Manchester and Bolton to the east meet those from Liverpool and Southport to the west, although there are no longer through trains to Liverpool as the diesel service from here interchanges with the electric Merseyrail trains at Kirkby. There is also a connection to the West Coast main line to the south.
