SD3218 : End of the pier tramway

taken 6 years ago, near to Southport, Sefton, England

End of the pier tramway
End of the pier tramway
A simple wooden buffer next to a wooden control hut. Probably adequate, given that the tram only moves at walking pace SD3218 : End of the line!.
Southport Pier :: SD3317

The pier, although shortened in 1897 compared with its fullest extent in 1868, is still Britain's second longest, after Southend on Sea, with a length of approximately 1 kilometre. The gradual receding of the shoreline since it was built in 1860 means that even at a spring high tide no more than half its length is above water, and at extreme low tide the sea can be up to 3 kilometres beyond the present pier end.

The pier is listed grade 2 (list entry 1379746) although I am surprised it is not at least grade 2* given its historical interest.
