Buckingham Palace
Buckingham Palace, probably the most famous residence in Britain.

Buckingham Palace has been the official London residence of the UK’s sovereigns since 1837 when Queen Victoria ascended the throne. However, it was a royal residence before this date. The core of the present house was built in 1703 for John Sheffield, 1st Duke of Buckingham (3rd creation) and Normanby (not to be confused with George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham, 2nd creation, Charles I’s favourite who was assassinated in 1628).

The house was bought by George III in 1761 for his wife, Queen Charlotte. The house became known as the ‘Queen's House’, and 14 of George III's 15 children were born there. During the reign of George IV the architect John Nash was employed to transform the house into a palace. At this time, among the rooms remodelled by Nash were the State and semi-State Rooms, which remain virtually unchanged to this day. Parliament agreed to a budget of £150,000, however, by 1829 costs had escalated to nearly half a million pounds. Due to his extravagance Nash lost his job, and on the death of George IV in 1830, his younger brother William IV employed Edward Blore to finish the work. In 1913, the famous east front with its balcony was refaced with Portland stone by architect Sir Aston Webb.
