One of two entrances to the Tadcaster Brewery, see also SE4843 : Centre Lane entrance to John Smith's Brewery. The ironwork over the gateway is listed grade 2 (list entry 1132436) along with adjacent buildings and dates from 1883, although the brewery itself was founded in 1758, before John Smith's time.

The brewery was founded in 1758 although the name John Smith's only dates from 1852. Its buildings and ornate chimney (all grade 2 listed) dominate the town.
