No access for motor vehicles
No access for motor vehicles
One might not expect motor vehicles to appear here, but the track on this side of the gate is designated as a Public Access Route, and is available to quad bikes and similar. Through the gate, the track is restricted to bridleway status to ensure that off-roaders do not damage the medieval remains.
Ingarsby deserted medieval village :: SK6805
This is an extensive site with well preserved earthworks allowing the extent of the village to be well understood. The village disappeared as the result of inclosures by the Abbey of Leicester in 1469, the area being given over to sheep and cattle grazing. Following the dissolution it became part of the immediate demesne of Ingarsby Hall, with the result that it was never put to plough so earthworks were never disturbed. The site is designated as a Scheduled Monument.

The village covered most of the sloping hillside to the south of the hall, an area traversed by two public bridleways giving good access to the site. There are several well defined hollow ways and a number of other lesser lanes delineating a number of tofts.

The designated area includes the moated area now occupied by the Hall and its farmyard in the north west corner of the site. To the west of Ingarsby Lane, which splits the site, is the low lying area once forming a large mill pond. The mill dam exists at the northern end of this.

The Monument also includes a small area of ridge and furrow agriculture at the southern end of the site.
