Ridge and furrow at Hamilton deserted village
Not included in the designated area of the Scheduled Monument.
Hamilton deserted medieval village
Hamilton appears to have dwindled by the late 14th century unlike other nearby villages which suffered inclosure by the Abbey of Leicester. In 1377 it was recorded as having only four taxpayers, and it was deserted within the next 100 years.
It appears however that the area has been continuously put to grazing since then, as the earthworks remaining are substantial and define the layout well. The village is partly surrounded by ridge and furrow cultivation, a portion of which to the north of Melton Brook is within the area of the Monument.
There are several distinct hollow ways and some less deep ditches that are probably toft boundaries. To the south west of the area are two platforms, one of which is thought to have contained a chapel, the other moated and possibly a manor house site. Close to this is a pond which might well have been a fishpond associated with the manor.
The site is a Scheduled Monument.
