SN2535 : Why the stile?

taken 17 years ago, near to Star, Pembrokeshire/Sir Benfro, Wales

Why the stile?
Why the stile?
This is the church of St Clydey. At several of the Anglican churches (Yr Eglwys yng Nghymru) in this area we find a stile immediately beside the gates. Why? Was there a tradition that the gates were only opened for special occasions such as weddings and funerals?
